CHANGES AT THE CLC
In order to better serve our consumers, make the most efficient use of our resources, and increase employment potential, the Computer Learning Center (CLC) is expanding its training opportunities, effective Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

We have created two training paths as well as an overview curriculum designed to let people know what topics we'll be covering in our various courses. Too often people will sign up for a class without any idea of what they'll learn, only to find that they aren't interested or don't have the necessary skills. The overviews will generally not be hands-on but will give examples to guide consumers in making informed training choices.

The overviews will cover such broad topics as Microsoft Office, Computer Graphics/Desktop Publishing, Web Design; and PC Troubleshooting and Repair. Each Overview component will generally last one hour and will meet twice a week for one to two weeks. For example, the Microsoft Office Overview will spend one hour each on Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint and will meet either on a Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday for two weeks.

Classes in the two training paths may be longer and will be hands-on. One path is called "I'd Like to Learn..." for those people interested in learning computer skills for personal use or who would like eventually to use their new skills in the work force but are not yet comfortable with a more structured, intensive program. Similar to classes we've given before but broken into smaller sessions, we hope to let people quickly learn what they want, rather than having to wait until the start of a new semester. Class registration is on a first-come first-served basis.

Among the many classes to be offered in the future are:

  • I'd Like to Learn . . .
  • Email
  • How to surf the web
  • Computer basics
  • Word
  • About spreadsheets
  • How to make a web page
  • Computer graphics

The second path is our Vocational Certification Program. This path is for people who are serious about training for employment, are self-motivated, and are ready to make the time and learning commitments necessary to be successful. They must also be serious about entering or returning to the workforce as soon as possible.

The vocational classes will be limited in size and will move at a fairly rapid pace. Additional one-on-one assistance will be available. However, attendance, prerequisites and assignment requirements will be enforced. Acceptance into the Vocational Certification Program is not first- come first-served but rather is application based. Applications will be available at Independence, Inc. by Monday, August 13.

This fall the two Certification Programs being offered are :

  • A+ Certification Training
One hour, Tuesday - Friday for 10 weeks
    Class size limited to 12.
You will learn PC maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, basic networking, and take sample A+ tests. At the end of the course you will have attained the competency of an entry-level service technician and be ready to take your official A+ certification test. This test may be taken online or at a certified testing site - there are several in Topeka. Currently the fee for the exam is $128. Please Note: this is not an Independence, Inc. charge.

LOAN BANK NEWS
As always, we are here to serve your Durable Medical Equipment needs! Don't forget that we can lend items for 30-90 days for you to try before you buy or use for short-term recovery from surgery, etc. If you have items checked out that are past due, please be sure to return them or call us for an extension.

The Loan Bank is currently well-stocked on consumable items such as adult diapers and disposable bed pads. You may remember that we had to start limiting the number of times in a year that consumable items could be taken from the Loan Bank, however, due to our fortune in receiving donations, we can give more generously when you request consumable items. Please call the AT Staff at 841-0333 if you are in need of consumable items.

We are also in need of volunteers to help us straighten up around the Loan Bank. If you or someone you know is in the mood to clean, stock, and organize, please call us at 841-0333 and we will see about putting you to work!

NEW KANSAS SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVOCACY GROUP
Kansans for IDEA Compliance is an organization committed to assisting Kansas families in resolving their problems regarding receiving appropriate services for their children with disabilities in school. Kansas Schools are not complying with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and children with disabilities are currently being denied appropriate services guaranteed to them by law. Unfortunately in spite of the law having been on the books for many years, most Kansas schools are out of compliance. It is our goal to see this change.

Kansans for IDEA Compliance also serves as an umbrella coalition Kansans for IDEA Compliance Association (KIC Ass.) comprised of organizations, attorneys, and individual advocates devoted to this cause. Under this umbrella we will act in concert to affect real change in Kansas Schools. Through education, legislative efforts, and enforcement we are committed to seeing that all Kansas children with disabilities are provided with the free and appropriate public education guaranteed them under the law.
