 Human Diversity Task Force

Helping ourselves as individuals, our agency, and our community to understand, accept and appreciate human diversity.

Our Values:

 We believe...

...that there can be harmony in a world of differences.

...that even though there are many different cultures we belong to one human race.

...in our individuality, and at the same time, we celebrate our community.

...that we enhance our problem-solving abilities through being open-minded to other points of view.

...in offering our community a chance to educate itself.

...in the value of interacting with a wide variety of people from many different cultures.

...that in order to develop new friends, we must be friendly.

...that even a small group of people can make a big difference.

...in respecting one another.

...that prejudices and stereotypes are learned and can be unlearned. We recognize that unlearning prejudices and stereotypes is hard work. We respect all honest efforts to learn new ways.

...in the value of all different cultures, races, communities, religions, ways of living and points of view.

To get involved with diversity issues in our community:

  • Learn about other cultures by attending lectures and discussions, reading books, viewing documentaries, or taking classes.
  • Get to know many people from many different cultures.
  • Avoid generalizations and stereotyping about people.
  • Use respectful language. Learn what terms to use.
  • Avoid disrespectful jokes, remarks, or statements.
  • Provide an atmosphere of acceptance in your home and work environments.
  • Challenge the people around you to increase their awareness of diversity issues.

Working together to promote independent living and equal rights.
